Huka Falls are spectacular rapids near Taupo, on New Zealand’s North Island and are the most visited natural attraction in New Zealand. This well-formed track follows the edge of the Waikato River through pockets of native bushland,The easy, undulating pathway delivers clear, elevated views of the river’s deep aquamarine water before arriving directly at the thundering Huka Falls viewing platforms.

The Experience: The mighty Waikato River, which is normally around 100m wide, is squeezed through a narrow 15m wide gorge. The pressure forces over 220,000 litres of water per second through the volcanic canyon, bursting out the end in a captivating thundering torrent. It’s enough power to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool in just 11 seconds! After rainfall the water level is even higher and more thrilling to observe.

The View: The falls are a striking turquoise colour due to the crystal-clear mineral-rich water originating in Lake Taupo, combined with aeration. Billions of tumbling air bubbles scatter sunlight and intensify the vivid blue colour as the water is dramatically pushed through the canyon.

Suitability: Walkers, wheelchairs and prams

Terrain Type: Paved and mostly dirty path that is uneven and rocky in areas.

There is free parking right next to the pedestrian footbridge over the falls, including two accessible car spots (one on each side of the toilet block). The car park is locked overnight and a release fee applies.

Terrain: Flat concrete pedestrian bridge over the falls. The rest of track is largely a dirt path, uneven and rocky in some places, but still accessible for wheelchairs. The viewing areas are a combination of well graded dirt surfacing, rocks and concrete platforms.

Water safety: Due to the extreme currents and aerated water, swimming and other recreational activities in the immediate vicinity are highly discouraged. Always stay on designated paths.
